This data set provides the Estimated numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in 2023. In 2023, 1,958,310 new cancer cases and 609,820 cancer deaths are projected to occur in the United States. 

Estimates of Annual Fossil-Fuel CO2 Emitted for Each State in the U.S.A. and the District of Columbia for Each Year from 1960 through 2001. Consumption data for coal, petroleum, and natural gas are multiplied by their respective thermal conversion factors, which are in units of heat energy per unit of fuel consumed (i.e., per cubic foot, barrel, or ton), to calculate the amount of heat energy derived from fuel combustion. Results are expressed in terms of heat energy obtained from each fuel type. These energy consumption data were multiplied by their respective carbon dioxide emission factors, which are called carbon content coefficients by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These factors quantify the mass of oxidized carbon per unit of energy released from a fuel. In the U.S.A., they are typically expressed in units of teragrams of carbon (Tg-C = 10^12 grams of carbon) per quadrillion British thermal units (quadrillion Btu = 10^15 Btu, or "quad"), and are highest for coal and lowest for natural gas. Our results are given in teragrams of carbon emitted. To convert to carbon dioxide, multiply by 44/12 (= 3.67).

  Definitions: The number of children and youth in the foster care system by race or Hispanic origin. Some states allow children to remain in the foster care system until their 18th birthday while other states have age limits that extend a few years beyond this. The current indicator includes children of all ages. Percent estimates of children in each race/Hispanic group are based on the total number of children in foster care with race/ethnicity data. A small number of AFCARS records across many states were missing information on the child’s race/Hispanic group and were also not included in the “unable to determine” category. These missing data are excluded from percentage and frequency distributions. Youth are categorized as being in foster care if they entered prior to the end of the current fiscal year and have not been discharged from their latest foster care spell by the end of the current fiscal year. Race or Hispanic origin are mutually exclusive categories. Children who are of Hispanic origin are not classified as any other race. National estimates include Puerto Rico. The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia produces a monthly coincident index for each of the 50 states. The indexes are released a few days after the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) releases the employment data for the states. The Bank issues a release each month describing recent trends in the state indexes, with special coverage of the three states in the Third District: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. The coincident indexes combine four state-level indicators to summarize current economic conditions in a single statistic. The four state-level variables in each coincident index are nonfarm payroll employment, average hours worked in manufacturing by production workers, the unemployment rate, and wage and salary disbursements plus proprietors' income deflated by the consumer price index (U.S. city average). The trend for each state’s index is set to the trend of its gross domestic product (GDP), so long-term growth in the state’s index matches long-term growth in its GDP. A dynamic single-factor model is used to create the state indexes. James Stock and Mark Watson developed the basic model for constructing a coincident index for the U.S. Theodore Crone and Alan Clayton-Matthews adapted the basic model for the states. The method involves a system of five major equations: one equation for each input variable and one equation for an underlying (latent) factor that is reflected in each of the indicator (input) variables. The underlying factor represents the state coincident index. The model and the input variables are consistent across the 50 states, so the state indexes are comparable to one another.

Common Core of Data: State Dropout and Completion Data The report draws on a wide array of surveys and administrative datasets to present statistics on high school dropout and completion rates at the state and national levels. The report includes estimates of the percentage of students who drop out in a given 12-month period (event dropout rates), the percentage of young people in a specified age range who are high school dropouts (status dropout rates), and the percentage of young people in a specified age range who hold high school credentials (status completion rates). In addition, the report includes data on the percentage of students who graduate with a regular diploma within four years of starting ninth grade (adjusted cohort graduation rates).  

Program Overview:The Common Core of Data (CCD) nonfiscal surveys consist of data submitted annually to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) by state education agencies (SEAs) in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the four US Island Areas (American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the US Virgin Islands), the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), and the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). In order to provide data comparable across states, NCES and representatives of SEAs have worked since the 1950s to develop and accept common data items and definitions. The EDFacts Submission System allows for the collection of un-duplicated data on students who experienced homelessness and were reported as enrolled in public schools, even if they attend more than one local educational agency (LEA) during the school year. This report draws from that data to provide the only publicly available compilation of un-duplicated data for the EHCY program. The number of homeless students enrolled in public school districts and reported by state educational agencies (SEAs) during School Year (SY) 2016-17 was 1,355,821. This total is not intended to indicate the prevalence of children and youth experiencing homelessness, as it only includes those students who are enrolled in public school districts or LEAs. It does not capture school-aged children and youth who experience homelessness during the summer only, those who dropped out of school, or young children who are not enrolled in preschool programs administered by LEAs.

It’s the average number of people who become infected by an infectious person. If Rt is above 1.0, the virus will spread quickly. When Rt is below 1.0, the virus will stop spreading. The reason historical values change is that source is not producing a single point each day, but rather a single curve. One of the constraints of the model is that this curve be connected and smooth. So, if new data suggests that R~t~ should be higher, it will pull up previous values so that the newest point is connected. Imagine a rope lying on the ground. If you pick up the end of that rope, the rope needs to slope up to your hand. The same thing is roughly happening with the model. If all of a sudden a testing center releases far more tests than were expected, the R~t~ curve increases which drags up previous values of R~t~. Since case data is staggered in its arrival, a bunch of new cases will sometimes rewrite its view of history given the new data.

Estimates of excess deaths can provide information about the burden of mortality potentially related to COVID-19, beyond the number of deaths that are directly attributed to COVID-19. Excess deaths are typically defined as the difference between observed numbers of deaths and expected numbers. This visualization provides weekly data on excess deaths by jurisdiction of occurrence. Counts of deaths in more recent weeks are compared with historical trends to determine whether the number of deaths is significantly higher than expected. Estimates of excess deaths can be calculated in a variety of ways, and will vary depending on the methodology and assumptions about how many deaths are expected to occur. Estimates of excess deaths presented in this web page were calculated using Farrington surveillance algorithms (1). For each jurisdiction, a model is used to generate a set of expected counts, and the upper bound of the 95% Confidence Intervals (95% CI) of these expected counts is used as a threshold to estimate excess deaths. Observed counts are compared to these upper bound estimates to determine whether a significant increase in deaths has occurred. Provisional counts are weighted to account for potential under reporting in the most recent weeks. However, data for the most recent week(s) are still likely to be incomplete. Only about 60% of deaths are reported within 10 days of the date of death, and there is considerable variation by jurisdiction.

The FMHPI provides a measure of typical price inflation for houses within the United States. Values are calculated monthly and released at the end of the following month. For example, the FMHPI for March is published in late April. Seasonally and non-seasonally adjusted series are available at three levels of geographical aggregation: Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), state, and national. All series begin in January 1975. The national index is defined as a weighted average of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. indices. The data are from the linked infant birth and death files. To create linked data files, death certificates are linked with corresponding birth certificates for infants who die in the U.S. before their first birthday. The linked file is used for calculating infant mortality rates by race and ethnicity because these variables are more accurately collected on the birth certificate than the death certificate. For this table, the period linked file is used (the numerator of the mortality rates includes the deaths occurring in a given calendar year whether the birth occurred in that year or the preceding year).

In the United States, state laws require death certificates to be completed for all deaths, and Federal law mandates national collection and publication of deaths and other vital statistics data. The National Vital Statistics System, the Federal compilation of these data, is the result of the cooperation between the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and the states to provide access to national statistical information from death certificates.

The updated name recognizes that social distancing, or the limiting of close contact with others outside your household, can be practiced while mobility and engagement improve. In the fourth quarter 2010 issue of Southwest Economy, Dallas Fed researchers introduced new measures of real trade-weighted exchange rates for each of the 50 U.S. states. These indexes calculate the inflation-adjusted value of the U.S. dollar against the currencies of countries with which the state trades. The real exchange rates are aggregated across countries for each state using the average export share to the country over the period from 1997 to 2009. The indexes should allow analysts to more precisely identify the exchange rate movements that most affect demand for a state’s exports.

The grade is based on six factors: state academic standards, charter schools, home school regulation burden, private school choice, teacher quality, and digital learning. Because the Education and Workforce Task Force at ALEC focuses the most on private school choice and charter schools, those factors were given double weight in the calculation over overall rank and grade. The weighted grades were converted into a GPA average and an individual rank. We calculated states' education policy grades in the following manner. First, we converted all rankings into letter grades where possible. For example, we converted homeschooling regulation burden levels as such: none = A, low = B, moderate = C and high = D. Next, we converted all letter grades to a numerical score based on a GPA scale (A=4, B =3, C=2, D=1, F=0). Those scores were tallied and divided by the number of categories in which a score was present. In some categories, grades were awarded with pluses and minuses, and numerical conversions were altered appropriately. In the United States, the seasonality of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has traditionally been defined on the basis of weeks during which antigen-based tests detect RSV in >10% of specimens. Because molecular testing has become more widely used, we explored the extent of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)–based RSV testing and its impact on determining the seasonality of RSV.

Educational attainment in a science, engineering, or technology (SET) field gives people greater opportunities to work in higher-paying technical jobs than are generally available to those in other fields of study. Earning an associate's degree in an SET field also prepares an individual for more advanced technical education. This indicator represents the extent to which a state provides associate's level training in SET fields, controlling for the size of its college-age population. The cohort 18–24 years old was chosen to approximate the age range of most students who are pursuing an associate's degree. The National Center for Education Statistics counts the number of associate's degrees awarded in SET fields; these data include degrees in science and engineering technology fields that are not included with other similar indicators where only S&E fields are included. Associate's degrees are awarded at both 2-year and 4-year institutions in the United States, and there may be regional variations in the degree awards, based on the relationship of these institutions to each other in each state. Estimates of the population aged 18–24 years old are provided by the U.S. Census Bureau. Small differences in the indicator value between states or across time generally are not meaningful. Because students may move across state lines after receiving their associate's degrees, this indicator does not necessarily predict the qualifications of a state's future technical workforce.

The survey, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, collects the total number of graduate students, postdoctoral appointees, and doctorate-level non faculty researchers by demographic and other characteristic such as source of financial support. Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) designations are used to identify areas and population groups within the United States that are experiencing a shortage of health professionals. There are three categories of HPSA designation based on the health discipline that is experiencing a shortage: 1) primary medical; 2) dental; and 3) mental health. The primary factor used to determine a HPSA designation is the number of health professionals relative to the population with consideration of high need. Federal regulations stipulate that, in order to be considered as having a shortage of providers, an area must have a population-to-provider ratio of a certain threshold. For mental health, the population to provider ratio must be at least 30,000 to 1 (20,000 to 1 if there are unusually high needs in the community). The number of mental health care HPSA designations includes HPSAs that are proposed for withdrawal and HPSAs that have no data. By statute, designations are not withdrawn until a Federal Register Notice is published, generally once a year on or around July 1.

The five elements are: • Purpose: liking what you do each day and being motivated to achieve your goals • Social: having supportive relationships and love in your life • Financial: managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security • Community: liking where you live, feeling safe, and having pride in your community • Physical: having good health and enough energy to get things done daily Overall, 2017 was a challenging year for Americans’ well-being. The national Well-Being Index score for the U.S. in 2017 was 61.5 – a decline from 62.1 in 2016. This overall drop was characterized by declines in 21 states, easily the largest year-over-year decline in the 10-year history of the Well-Being Index. Not a single state showed statistically significant improvement compared to the previous year, which is also unprecedented in Well-Being Index measurement. In the state rankings, South Dakota and Vermont, followed by Hawaii, were the highest well-being states in 2017. South Dakota has ranked among the highest six states every year since 2013 and Vermont, which had the sixth highest well-being in 2016, shares the highest well-being score (64.1) in 2017. Neither state had scored at the top of the well-being state rankings before. Hawaii, which along with Colorado holds the distinction of ranking in the top 10 highest well-being states each year since 2008, ranked just below South Dakota and Vermont in 2017 with a score of 63.4. In 2016, Hawaii was ranked in first place with a 65.2 well-being score. Residents of West Virginia reported the lowest levels of well-being in 2017 for the ninth consecutive year with a well-being score of 58.8. Louisiana fell to its lowest rank ever, recording a score of 58.9, just above West Virginia.

The Justice Index is a snapshot of the degree to which each US state has adopted best practices for ensuring access to justice for all people. NCAJ identifies four key areas-- attorney access, support for self-represented litigants, language access and disability access. The index also examine the degree to which every state complies with these four key areas.

The AIX reports are designed and intended primarily for use by the state park directors and their staff for various purposes, such as identifying program, facility and personnel needs, formulating budgetary requests for state legislatures, and comparing their programs with those of the other states. For such “inhouse” use, the reported data essentially speak for themselves and require little explanation or amplification. Over the years, however, state parks data published in the AIX have been increasingly requested, and presumably used, by a growing number of other individuals – in academic institutions, other governmental agencies, and business and industry. Because of these expanding external interests, it is important that the subject data first be adequately understood so they may be properly applied. Birth rates are also higher among Hispanic and black adolescents than among their white counterparts. In 2016, Hispanic adolescent females ages 15-19 had a higher birth rate (31.9 births per 1,000 adolescent females) than black adolescent females (29.3) and white adolescent females (14.3). To help put these differences in perspective, estimates from 2013 show that eight percent of white adolescent females will give birth by their 20th birthday, as will 16 percent of black adolescent females and 17 percent of Hispanic adolescent females. Although Hispanics still have a higher teen birth rate than their black and white peers, the rate has declined substantially in recent years. Since 2007, the teen birth rate among Hispanics has declined by 58 percent, compared with declines of 53 percent for blacks and 47 percent for whites.

These are the latest U.S. farm sector income and wealth statistics data. The data include historical U.S. and State-level farm income and wealth estimates, and U.S.-level forecasts for the current calendar year. Data are released three times a year: typically in February, August, and November. The U.S.-level calendar-year forecast is first provided in February, and is updated in August and November. The August release converts the prior year's farm income and balance sheet forecasts to estimates, adds State-level farm income estimates, and revises previous years' estimates. Given the sudden, extreme impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on initial unemployment claims in recent weeks, our researchers’ standard approach for estimating the six-month change in coincident indexes is not appropriate. Therefore, the Philadelphia Fed has suspended the release of the state leading indexes indefinitely.  The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia produces leading indexes for each of the 50 states. The indexes are calculated monthly and are usually released a week after the release of the coincident indexes. The Bank issues a release each month describing the current and future economic situation of the 50 states with special coverage of the Third District: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. The leading index for each state predicts the six-month growth rate of the state’s coincident index. In addition to the coincident index, the models include other variables that lead the economy: state-level housing permits (1 to 4 units), state initial unemployment insurance claims, delivery times from the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) manufacturing survey, and the interest rate spread between the 10-year Treasury bond and the 3-month Treasury bill. A time-series model (vector autoregression) is used to construct the leading index.
