Kenya: Social and Political Indicators

This dashboard provides comprehensive data from a variety of sources on the socio-political system in Kenya relative to the rest of Africa in key areas, such as: safety and rule of law, national security, political participation and human rights, economic opportunity and business environment and human development. The data matrix contains about 100 indicators from the Mo Ibrahim Index of African Governance. Using a colored heat map you can easily identify Kenya's relative strengths and domains where the country's governance fails to meet the same standards as others on the continent.

In general, Kenya has improved its ranking among African states by overall governance quality from 23rd place in 2009 to 17th in 2013. Property rights, civil liberties, competitive business environment, and social welfare support are among the country's stronger performance categories. The coutnry has also made clear progress against malaria, according to the World Health Organisation.

Kenya's alarming performance in categories such as corruption and bureaucracy, political terror and violent crime, cross-border tension, human rights, judicial process, and bureaucracy and red tape suggest costly impediments to growth and its aspirations in the region and international community. Poor performance in tertiary education enrollment, improved water, and undernourishment speak to a weakness in the social fabric that could further undercut development.
