Reserve Bank of India

The Reserve Bank of India was established on April 1, 1935 in accordance with the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. Though originally privately owned, since nationalization in 1949, the Reserve Bank is fully owned by the Government of India. The Preamble of the Reserve Bank of India describes the basic functions of the Reserve Bank as: "to regulate the issue of Bank notes and keeping of reserves with a view to securing monetary stability in India and generally to operate the currency and credit system of the country to its advantage; to have a modern monetary policy framework to meet the challenge of an increasingly complex economy, to maintain price stability while keeping in mind the objective of growth."

      1. Data relate to amount outstanding as on last Friday of March up to 1984-85 and last reporting Friday of March thereafter. 2. Excluding the impact of merger on May 3, 2002, credit as percentage to aggregate deposit in 2002-03 was 54.7 percent, while credit and aggregate deposits as percentage to GDP were 27.9 per cent and 50.9 per cent, respectively. 3. Excluding the impact of conversion of a non-banking entity into a banking entity on October 11, 2004, credit, total investments and investments in Government securities as percentage of aggregate deposits in 2004-05 were 62.9 per cent, 42.8 per cent and 41.7 per cent, respectively. Further, credit, total investments, investments in Government securities and aggregate deposits as percentage to GDP were 32.9 per cent, 22.4 per cent, 21.8 per cent and 52.3 per cent, respectively. 4.
